About Course

Physical Performance Metrics (PPM)

Level: Basic – Community
Format: Hybrid (live sessions + guided labs + match/application project)
Total Duration: ~24 hours over 4 weeks
Tools Covered: Wimu (primary), with parallels for Catapult and STATSports
Optional Integrations: Hudl, Wyscout, InStat Scout, Tableau, Microsoft Power BI

Who it’s for

Community-to-semi-pro coaches, S&C staff, and analysts who want to measure what matters: plan training loads, profile positional demands and turn GPS outputs into useful coaching decisions.

You’ll be able to

  • Explain the key physical demands of modern football by position and game model.

  • Set up Wimu GPS correctly (units, docking, syncing), capture clean data, and QC it.

  • Track & interpret core metrics (Total Distance, HSR, Sprints, Acc/Dec, HMLD, Impacts).

  • Build weekly load plans (microcycle), manage fatigue, and support return-to-play progressions.

  • Produce crisp reports coaches actually use—fast.

Course Structure (4 × 6-hour blocks)

Module 1 / Game Demands & GPS Basics (6 hrs)

  • Modern demands: intensity profiles, transitions, set-play bursts

  • Position profiles (FB/CM/W/9) and “what good looks like”

  • Wimu fundamentals: hardware, vests, docking, sampling rates

  • Live lab: pair/set units, start/stop capture, field sync, event tags

  • Data hygiene: unit assignment, firmware/battery logs, baseline checks
Outcome: You can set up Wimu, capture a session, and export clean data.

Module 2 / Metrics that Matter (6 hrs)

  • Core metrics: Total Distance, HSR (thresholds), Sprint Distance, Acc/Dec, Impacts

  • Composite stress: HMLD, “work ratio” ideas

  • Thresholding: absolute vs individualised (vMAX-linked zones)

  • Context beats numbers: drill type, pitch size, opponent quality

  • Lab: Build a session report in Wimu software + coaching notes
Outcome: You can interpret a session and explain it in football language.

Module 3 / Weekly Planning & Player Management (6 hrs)

  • Microcycle design: MD-4 → MD+1 patterns for intensity/load

  • Monitoring signals: RPE/wellness, monotony/strain, when to intervene

  • Return-to-Play: staged progressions with GPS targets

  • Squad segmentation: starters/non-starters, top-ups, individual conditioning

  • Lab: Weekly plan for two positions (e.g., Winger vs CM) with target GPS bands
Outcome: You can set realistic weekly targets and manage loads safely.

Module 4 / Reporting, Integration & Competitive Edge (6 hrs)

  • Coach-ready reporting: one-page summary; green/amber/red logic

  • Video + data: linking key GPS moments to Hudl/Wyscout/InStat clips

  • Talent signals: speed freshness, repeat-sprint ability, late-game intensity retention

  • Club SOPs: naming, backups, data protection, consent

  • Lab (assessment): Deliver a match or week report + 2–3 coach actions
Outcome: You can publish clear reports that change training tomorrow.

Assessments

  • Short quiz at the end of each module

  • Final submission: one match or week report (PDF), a planning sheet (two positions), and raw GPS exports

  • Pass = practical accuracy, coach clarity, and actionable recommendations
